The prefecture of Chania is one of the four prefectures of Crete and it covers the west part of the island. It has an area of 2.376 km and approximately 134,000 residents. It is mainly a mountainous region but it is also characterized by velvet beaches, particularly on its south part, where it meets the Libyan Sea.
